On Saints and Sinners Fr. McKay and I talked about our trip to Ireland the Matt Talbot’s Centenary (additional post coming!). We then talked about St. Anthony of Padua in the balance of the first segment and briefly about St. Aloysius Gonzaga in the second.
On What the World Needs Now I was joined by guest Avery Lane. Avery is a convert to the faith and writes for Catholic Exchange in addition to his work with Hozana and the Living Rosary app. In the first half of the show we talked about two Mexican saints/blesseds that Avery had written about and that I had never heard of.
The first was St. Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio (aka St. Joselito). St. Joselito was just thirteen when he was martyred for his Catholic faith. As a young teen he wanted to fight along side his brothers in the Christeros movement in Mexico and paid for it with his life. The article linked to above has all the details. What struck me when I read the article in preparation for the show was the parallel with (soon to be) St. Carlo Acutis (9/7/25). I placed a call to my friend Mary Bea Damico, architect of the Carlo Acutis Shrine at Malvern, to see if she knew of Joselito. Turns out that she had a picture of him placed in the Good Shepherd Chapel within the Shrine. Odd or God?
The second person we discussed was Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, AKA “the Angelo of Mexico. His is a fascinating story and he is an “incorruptible”, i.e. his body has not decayed since his death. What is a little eerie about it is that they have his head tilted within the glass tomb so that when you visit it seems as though he is looking directly at you.
In the second half of the show Avery talked a bit about the role a visit to Guadalupe played in his conversion and his attraction to Mexico, it’s Catholicism and it’s saints. he also gave us some more info about Hozana a website to connect Catholics around the world in prayer, and the Living Rosary app that allows you to connect with others and pray a rosary with 4 others, each taking a decade each day. Links to both are above.
